Detroit Lakes, MN — This MEA weekend will be another chance for young hunters to get out in the woods and get a head start on the firearms deer season. The 2nd annual Youth Firearms Deer Season will run Thursday, October 15th through Sunday, October 18th and is open to hunters between the ages of 10 and 17. Detroit Lakes Area Wildlife Supervisor Rob Baden says youth are welcome to hunt on either public or their own private land and is an excellent opportunity for young kids to get their start in hunting.
Youth ages 10 to 13 must be accompanied by an adult parent, guardian, or mentor over the age of 18. The adult does not need to be licensed but cannot shoot a deer themselves. Participating youth must possess a valid firearm deer license and youth age 12 and older must also have a firearms safety certificate or apprentice hunter validation. Visit the MN DNR website or consult the hunting regulations handbook for more information.
