Pet owners in Minnesota are being warned not to release goldfish into local lakes and waterways because the little swimmers are growing into enormous monster fish and having a negative ecological impact.
The warning comes after officials outside of Minneapolis discovered huge goldfish in a lake. They say goldfish released into the wild can grow seven-times their typical size and wreak havoc on indigenous species of fish and also uproot plant life and dirty the water. Last November, officials in Carver County, outside of Minneapolis, removed 50,000 goldfish from local lakes and ponds.
