Mordern Carnivore Reconnecting Adults with Skills for Hunting, Fishing, and Foraging
Syre, MN — A big focus of conservation groups and state departments of natural resources is getting the next generation of hunters and anglers involved in the sport and interested in wildlife, but another Minnesota based organization is switching the focus to what they say is a missed generation. Modern Carnivore is a platform that is geared at introducing adults into hunting, fishing, and foraging and was founded by Mark Norquist.
A generation ago, a majority of those in greater Minnesota were surrounded by folks who hunted and fished and were taught those skills by their fathers and grandfathers, but as families migrated to more urban communities the disconnect eventually grew. Norquist says Modern Carnivore’s mission is to reconnect that group.
Greg Kvale is a board member with Backcountry Hunters and Anglers and is partnered with Modern Carnivore. Kvale, an award-winning wild game cook, says not only is there a large group of people who don’t understand hunting, fishing, and foraging, but there’s many who don’t know the arts of cooking it what they collect.
Greg’s award-winning recipe for a Pan Seared Mallard Breast & Wild Rice Pilaf with Fiddleheads is available at www.modcarn.com.
Norquist hopes that if they can get more adults interested in the outdoors, in return they will pass on those skills to the next generation as well.
