Mahnomen, MN — The Mahnomen City Council held their first monthly meeting last week on Tuesday, September 7th. At the meeting the council approved their preliminary tax levy for the 2022 year and reviewed their 2022 proposed budget. Currently Mahnomen residents are looking at a 10% levy increase over last year. Interim Mahnomen City Administrator Kari Kirschbaum says some of the items included in next year’s budget included a housing study and comprehensive plan, safe routes to school projects, and continued infrastructure updates.

The Mahnomen City Council also approved seeking RFP’s for their housing study and comprehensive plan that they have budgeted for next year. Kirschbaum says these are both being done to evaluate the needs of the city in order for it to grow.

And the council approved a trio of arts grants for the main street project and is also moving forward with a proposal to create an Arts commission as well. Kirshbaum says the Arts continues to be a focus for the city.

And an update on the search for a permanent replacement for the City Administrator position. The city council has narrowed down the final three candidates and will interview them on September 15th, where they will likely offer the position to one of the candidates.
