Ada-Borup-West CC Coach Wins Fargo Half-Marathon
Ada, MN — Ada-Borup-West Cross Country Coach Spencer Ruebke notched one off the bucket list by not only competing in the Fargo Half Marathon this past Saturday, but also winning the race by a wide margin. The MSUM alumni won the race with a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, and 32 seconds, more than 7 minutes ahead of the next closest competitor. We had the chance to catch up Spencer on Monday after he had some time to rest and recover from the event. Ruebke says this event has been on his calendar for a while.
For the last 12 weeks, Ruebke was running around 10 miles a day, six days a week to get into marathon form. However the week of the half marathon, he encountered a slight set back as he had to overcome sickness. He surprised himself though when he began his run this weekend and quickly found himself way ahead of the competition and had to adjust his game plan.
Because of his torrid pace at the beginning, Ruebke says he struggled during the final leg of the race. Ultimately, he would still finish roughly a mile ahead of the next closest runner.
And Ruebke, who is also a 5th grade teacher at Ada-Borup-West, hopes to provide some inspiration to those who may think running a marathon may be impossible. He says the great thing about running is that anyone can do it.
