Polk County, MN – The inclement winter weather for Minnesota brings challenges for many individuals looking to indulge in winter fun and activities. A popular hobby many Minnesotans take part in is ice fishing. However, Tom Brault from the Polk County Sheriff’s Department says it is important to remember the dangers winter can bring. Despite the current warm temperatures, snow is expected this weekend. Snow, cold weather and ice are major factors to contend with in order to be safe during the winter season. Investigator Brault says that icy conditions are dangerous due to the uneven surface of the roads and lakes. One important piece of advice Brault gives is to know the proper ice thickness and have equipment on oneself in case of emergency.

The Minnesota DNR’s report on ice-related accidents and fatalities reported that all fell through the ice. More tips on safety precautions can be found at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website. These tips include survival tactics for cold water immersion that Investigator Brault also covers, how to use rescue equipment and helping others.
