Ada, MN — This past weekend we got a solid reminder of quickly the winter driving conditions can change and just how difficult it can be. Even the best drivers can find themselves stranded in the ditch during a winter storm. For those worst-case scenarios, it’s important for everyone to carry a winter survival kit in their vehicle. Kristi Rott of Norman-Mahnomen Public Health recently shared some suggestions for what should be included in your kit.

A few other recommendations and tips for your winter traveling. Stay on main roads and highways and stick to the flattest roads you can with the most windblocks. Avoid hills and roads with sloping surfaces wherever possible. If you do become stranded for an extended period of time, run your engine for about 10 minutes every hour to stay warm and save fuel. And if you have to spend the night in your car, turn on the overhead light so that rescues or work crews can see.
