Fosston, MN – The Business & Manufacturing Appreciation Dinner was held on Saturday, January 29th following the Frosty Days celebration. At the banquet, multiple awards were presented to individuals and groups for their participation and service to the community. The Chili Cook-Off held in conjunction with Frosty Days showed off the cooking talents of local individuals and businesses, but the overall winner recognized at the appreciation dinner was Shear Magic Hair Salon. Tom Sedler was posthumously awarded the Service Award for his many years of work at the Loaves & Fishes Food Shelf in Fosston. The Embassy Basement Volunteers were recognized for the Group of the Year. The individuals who make up this volunteer group are Carol Wold, Jeanie Titeria, Geri Hove, Sharon Goldsmith, Carolyn Ostrom, Marilyn Smith, Mary Jo Olson, Jean Olson, and Mary Steinbrenner. Representative Deb Kiel was also in attendance at the appreciation banquet and commented on the hard-work displayed in the community.

Representative Kiel also shared about the upcoming Minnesota Legislative session that will begin on Monday, January 31st via Zoom. Meetings will be held on Mondays and Thursdays, with small subcommittees meeting on Monday. Bonding is at the top of the list, along with the budget surplus.

Kiel also reflects on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected local small businesses. Despite being able to adapt to many customers who have sheltered in-place at home, finding employees has created an obstacle to assist in making the businesses run. The lack of available employees has also challenged the farming and healthcare fields.

The legislative sessions will be held virtually for the Minnesota House of Representatives. There will be hybrid committees for the Minnesota Senate. All sessions can be viewed by livestream through the Minnesota legislative website at leg.mn.gov.
