(Aitkin, MN) — The Aitkin County Board of Commissioners held their first February meeting on Tuesday with Department requests and adjustments to upcoming meetings covering their time from the Government Center Board Room.

Environmental Services Director Andrew Carlstrom presented to the Board a request to send a decision back to the Planning Commission on a zoning matter for Solid Waste collection.

The Board also approved a Residential Waste Electronics Collection on June 4th and sent the Gun Lake Family Campground Discretionary Campground EAW back to the EAW Committee for a Board’s decision to be made at the February 22nd meeting.

Economic Development Coordinator Mark Jeffers went into more detail on a request for funding toward the Child Care Grant for Aitkin County.

The $50,000 request was approved by the Board with grants being available for new and existing child care providers.

Interim Land Commissioner Dennis Thomspon notified the Board of the DNR’s intentions to begin the Minnesota Heritage Forest Project which would include roughly 1,100 acres in Aitkin County.

A public hearing for a land classification was set for April 12th at 10am during the regular board meeting. The Board also scheduled a Committee of the Whole meeting for February 15th at 1pm.

Engineer John Welle spoke to Commissioners on a transfer to municipal state-aid construction funds.

Approval for transfer to zero out the 2021 year end Long Lake Conservation Center was given by Commissioners. 

The Board did approve a Fire Protection Contract with the City of Palisade, a Consumption & Display Permit for the Minnewawa Sportsmen’s Club, and LG220 Permits for Up North ATV and Lawler Area Community Clubs.
