VB Mahnomen-Waubun 3 Clearbrook-Gonvick 2 (19-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 15-10)

Clearbrook, MN — The Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds snapped the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears four game winning streak on Tuesday in a match that went the distance into the late hours of Tuesday night.

Set one went to the Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears 25-19. C-G would take an early lead and held the Thunderbirds at arm’s length for the whole set. In set two, Mahnomen/Waubun bounced back nicely going up 6-1 early. From there, it was Mahnomen/Waubun holding Clearbrook-Gonvick at bay as the T-Birds won set 25-16. Set three was more tightly contested. Mahnomen/Waubun would score the first three points of the set and then Clearbrook-Gonvick would string six straight points together to go up 6-3. From that point, Mahnomen/Waubun would make another early run to take the lead back 8-6. Both teams would trade blows for the rest of the set with the deficit never getting any higher then four and the Bears would win 25-22 and go up 2-2 in the match. In set four, Mahnomen/Waubun would take an early 7-1 lead. But no panic from Clearbrook-Gonvick, who had won four straight games up to this point, would match with a 7-0 run to take an 8-7 lead and trigger a Mahnomen/Waubun timeout.

In that stoppage, things would get interesting. Both officials and Head Coaches, Vickie Anderson for Mahnomen/Waubun and Lindsey Samson for Clearbrook-Gonvick, gathered around the scorers table for a little over five minutes reviewing the scorers book. When play was resumed, it was determined that Clearbrook-Gonvick sent the wrong server back in previous rotations. The timeout was called with Clearbrook-Gonvick leading 8-7 and when the set started back up, Mahnomen/Waubun would lead 8-5 because of the out of rotation. That stoppage would impact the next 12 points significantly as Mahnomen/Waubun took a commanding 17-8 lead. However, the no quit Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears would score the next 10 straight points and lead 18-17. Unfortunately for Clearbrook-Gonvick, miscues in the final stages of set four would allow Mahnomen/Waubun to win 25-22 to force a fifth set. C-G miscues carried over into the final set allowing the Thunderbirds to take the early lead and eventually hold off Clearbrook-Gonvick for the 3-2 win.

Mahnomen/Waubun is now 2-2 on the season and will play in a tournament this Saturday in Hawley. Clearbrook-Gonvick drops their first game of the year falling to 4-1 and will be on the road on Thursday at Pine River-Backus (YourLiveEvent.com).

Mahnomen/Waubun won the C-Team and JV Games 2-1 each.
