Fertile, MN — The Fertile-Beltrami Falcons defeated the Win E Mac Patriots 84-65 on Thursday night to advance to the Section 8A Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Both teams were on fire offensively in the first half but it was the fast start and early lead for Fertile-Beltrami that was the difference. The Falcons lead 17-6 at the 12:55 mark of half one and the deficit would stay in that range for the rest of then night as the Falcons kept the Patriots at arms length. Falcons Freshman Preston Hanson was a big part of the Falcons offense barrage as we connected on three 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 13 points off the bench. Win E Mac Junior Guard Justin Courneya, also eclipsed the 2,000 career point mark for his career early in the first half. The Junior has averaged over 30 points per game this season.

In the second half, Fertile-Beltrami continued to keep the deficit in double figures and at one point enjoyed a 22 point lead. Win E Mac was able to trim it to eleven, 58-47, with 10 minutes to play but the Falcons defense and continuous scoring was too much as Fertile-Beltrami would eventually win 84-65. With the win, the Falcons will now play the #2 Seeded Cass Lake-Bena Panthers in the Section 8A Boys Basketball Quarterfinals on Saturday at Ralph Englestad Arena in Thief River Falls.
