Win-E-Mac 3 at Clearbrook-Gonvick 2 (20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12)

Clearbrook, MN — It was a heck of a first night for the new High School Volleyball Season on Tuesday night in Clearbrook.

The Clearbrook-Gonvick Bears and Win E Mac Patriots came into the matchup in similar positions, graduating multiple core seniors from last season and being two young teams. The youth of both teams showed at times throughout the match but both teams left it all on the floor in a match that went the distance and then some

Set one saw the Bears coming back from a 20-18 deficit and scoring the last seven points of to win 25-20. Set two seemed nearly identical as the first. Back and forth play with the lead never growing to more than three points and that would be the winning deficit as the Patriots would take the set 25-22. Set three saw similar traits as the first two but it featured a massive rally from the Bears. Finding themselves down by nine at one point it seemed insurmountable to mount a comeback, but the Bears played with heart like Coach Ehlers expected them to, but would eventually come up short falling in set three 26-24. Win E Mac was then one set away from taking the win but Clearbrook-Gonvick would not go down without a fight winning the fourth set 26-24. As expected the fifth and final set had it all. Back and forth action, a run by one team and a comeback victory by another. The Patriots fell behind 8-4 and then rallied behind Senior Bret Duchamp, who had five kills in the final set ensuring she left her mark on the opening match of the season after tearing her ACL last season.

The Patriots begin their season at 1-0 and will be at home on Thursday to play an afternoon game against Stephen -Argyle. For the Bears, they fall to 0-1 and will play again next Tuesday, the day after Labor Day, and matchup with the Bagley Flyers in the Smackdown of Clearwater County.
