Detroit Lakes at Aitkin

A strong start on both ends of the floor for the Aitkin Gobblers pushed them to a 75-56 victory over the Detroit Lakes Lakers Thursday night at Aitkin High School.

The Gobblers were strong in the paint by out outrebounding 17-6 in the first half and also took advantage of Gus Sanford’s 17 points. A double-digit lead was held throughout much of the first half but Detroit Lakes never shied away and kept hanging around despite trailing 41-23 at the half with Nathan Cihak putting up 7 points.

A sluggish start in the second half for Aitkin did not stop their offensive push as Gus Sanford got to the free throw line and hit 13-of-17. The Lakers were able to hit shots to cut their deficit down to 11 point but the Gobblers were able to turn around the other way by converting 22-of-29 at the free throw line. Aitkin also stole away the game with 35 rebounds compared to Detroit Lakes’ 17 rebounds.

Gus Sanford finished with a game-high 35 points and 5 rebounds to improve Aitkin’s win streak up to 4 in a row. Sanford has also averaged 32 points in those 4 straight Gobbler victories. Landon Janzen put up 12 points and 14 rebounds and Alex Palm added 10 points. Nathan Cihak led Detroit Lakes with 21 points Devon Burg added 11.

Aitkin now sits at 7-12 on the season with a road game Friday against Staples-Motley. Detroit Lakes falls to 8-13 as they will be in Little Falls on Saturday.
