Mahnomen-Waubun May Have To Change Thunderbirds Nickname

You may be aware of the controversy involving Native American-based nicknames at Minnesota high schools.  The example that’s had the most publicity is the Warroad Warriors.  But there’s another nickname that’s being looked at: the Mahnomen-Waubun Thunderbirds.  Mahnomen School Superintendent Jeff Bisek gives R&J News the story.

Bisek says the Committee would have until December to award an exemption or not.  If not, the Mahnomen-Waubun cooperative would have a year and a half to come up with a new nickname.
