Beltrami County Residents voted on Tuesday to fund the county’s new jail through a 0.65% local options sales tax for 30 years or until the county’s bonds are retired.  Support for the funding through sales tax was heavily favored over the “no” option that would have seen the project financed through increased property taxes over that same 30 year period.

Voter turnout for Beltrami County was 9,089 of an eligible 28,228 voters which accounts for a turnout of 32.2%. 8,802 of 9,089 voted in favor of the 0.65% local options sales tax which accounts for 96.84% of all votes.

The Beltrami County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted in favor of building a new jail back in November of 2022 and the jail will be located on Crown property on Pioneer Street Southeast.

A construction timeline has not been set yet.
