7AA Quarterfinal #6 Aitkin vs. #3 Eveleth-Gilbert

Aitkin’s bats were stymied and an early deficit handed the #6 seeded Gobblers their first loss in the Section 7AA Tournament, falling to the #3 Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears 5-1 Thursday from Braun Park in Cloquet.

The Gobblers had an early chance with Ella Jan putting herself into scoring position after a leadoff single. Megan Buchholz lined a ball into left field that sent Janzen around before she was gunned down at home.

Eveleth-Gilbert capitalized on an Aitkin error which allowed Anna Westby to tally an RBI single before she came in to score on a wild pitch. Lauren Lautigar added a 2-run single to but the Golden Bears up 4-0 after the first inning.

The early run support was more than enough for Lydia Delich as she went to scatter 5 Aitkin hits over 7 innings pitched. She also struck out 6 batters and walked one.

The Golden Bear bats were led by Anna Wesby and Alex Flannigan each had a double and a run scored. Joey Westby had a triple and a run scored.

Megan Buchholz took the complete game loss for the Gobblers and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks. Ella Janzen went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Ailie Kullhem and Abby Palm each had singles.

Aitkin fell to 9-10 on the season and then went on to face Mora in an Elimination Game. The Gobblers rallied to win 2-1 over the Mustangs to improve to 10-10.

Aitkin will face Esko out of the Consolation Bracket Tuesday, May 31st at 11am from the Grand Rapids Sports Complex
