VB: Breckenridge 3 Hawley 2 (26-24, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 15-13)

For the second straight game, Hawley had to fight back from a two sets to none deficit to force a deciding fifth set.  On Tuesday, Hawley won the fifth set.  Thursday night against Breckenridge, it was the Cowgirls who rode off with a fifth set victory.

Hawley tied the opening set at 24 with a service ace from Izzy Steer.  But two kills by Hailee Hanson gave Breckenridge a 26-24 win.  Hanson had six of her team high 15 kills in the opening set.

In set two, Hawley jumped to a 5-1 lead, but Breckenridge fought back to take the set 25-18.

Hawley’s Katy Vetter had six kills and an ace in set three, while Nuggets teammate Annaka Johnson added five kills and a block and Steer had two blocks as Hawley got back in the match with a 25-19 win.

In set four, Breckenridge led 4-0 early, then Hawley went on an 8-2 run to go up 10-7, the Cowgirls got to within three points at 21-18, then two Breckenridge violations and two Vetter kills gave the Nuggets a 25-18 win to force a deciding fifth set.

With set five tied at four, Hawley went on a 7-2 run to go up 11-6.  The Nuggets were up 13-11, needing just two points for the win.  But the Cowgirls scored the final four points to take set five 15-13.

Besides Hanson’s 15 kills, Erin Blaufuss had nine kills and 3.5 blocks for the Cowgirls.  Breckenridge is now 17-4 on the year with eight straight victories.

Johnson had 13 kills, three solo blocks and two block assists for Hawley; Vetter had 12 kills, a solo block and two block assists; Steer had eight kills, four solo blocks, three block assists and an ace.  The Nuggets’ five game winning streak comes to an end; Hawley is now 10-5 on the season.
