East Grand Forks Sacred Heart vs. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo

Thief River Falls, MN — The West Sub-Section Championship Game in Section 8A Boys Basketball did not dissapoint on Wednesday night. The Sacred Heart Eagles will defend their Section 8A Title in the Championship Game on Friday after beating the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies 50-48.

The game began slow on the offensive end for both teams, which was surprising considering that each squad will get out and run when they have the chance and they both put up 70 plus points in their quarterfinal round games respectively. It took until the 12:21 mark of the first half where we would see the first eight points of the game and the score knotted 4-4. With 5:45 left to play in the first half, the Ponies would take a 14-13 lead, a lead that they would not relinquish until late in the second half. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo would then take a 23-18 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Ponies came out firing on all cylinders as they would open up the second half on an 8-3 run to take a ten point lead, 31-21, triggering a timeout from Eagles Head Coach Destry Sterkel. The Ponies would hold onto that double digit lead and at one point, even go up by 12 points with 10:44 to play. But then, the defending section champions would come storming back and go on a 14-3 run over the next 4:15 to take the lead back 41-40 with just over six minutes to play. Those final six minutes would go back and forth but by the end of regulation, Sacred Heart Senior Landen Denny, would be the hero as he rebounded a three point shot from teammate Parker Erickson underneath the basket and put it back in as time expired giving the Eagles the two point win 50-48.

The Sacred Heart Eagles will now take on the East Sub-Section Champions, the Fosston Greyhounds for the Section 8A Boys Basketball title on Friday night. Friday night’s game can be heard and streamed on 96.7 FM KKCQ, 106.5 FM KRJB, YourLiveEvent.com, and Garden Valley Channel 37.
