Mahnomen-Waubun 4-16, Ada-Borup-West 6-3

Ada-Borup-West and Mahnomen-Waubun split a softball doubleheader Thursday in Ada.  The Cougars took the first game 6-4, while the Thunderbirds won the nightcap 16-3 in five innings.

Mahnomen-Waubun moved in front 3-1 after an inning and a half.  Then in the bottom of the third, Ada-Borup-West rallied for four runs to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.  Holly Flom and Brielle Engelstad each had a two run double for the Cougars in that inning.  Callie Solseng was the winning pitcher for ABW, while Brooklynn Hoban took the loss.

Game two was all Mahnomen-Waubun.  The Thunderbirds scored three runs in the first inning, then two in the second on a two run single by Caprina Francis.  The third inning was the key.  Pitcher Jazlyn Olson hit a three run homer to spark an eight run inning when 14 Thunderbirds batted.  Hoban later added a two run single and Olson drove in another run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

It was 13-0 in favor of Mahnomen-Waubun when Ada-Borup-West came to bat in the top of the fourth. The Cougars would get on the scoreboard courtesy of Engelstad’s three run homer.  But Mahnomen-Waubun responded with three more in their half of the fourth to make the score 16-3.  The Thunderbirds won via the ten run rule.

Olson got the game two victory, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out eight.  Solseng took the loss for ABW, allowing ten hits and eight runs in two and a third innings.

Francis and Brynn McArthur each had three hits for Mahnomen-Waubun (3-7) with Francis and Hoban driving in three runs apiece.  Macie Thornton was 2/2 with a hit by pitch for the Cougars (2-4).

Ada-Borup-West travels to Detroit Lakes for a doubleheader Friday, while Mahnomen-Waubun is off until Monday, when they host Red Lake Falls in Waubun.
