Recap

It was a Class B District 4 boys basketball battle Thursday night in Finley as May-Port-C-G hosted Nelson County. The Chargers got out in front early with an 8-0 run before the Patriots reeled them back in, going on a 15-5 run to take a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. From that point on, no team had more than a five-point lead through the rest of regulation. Nelson County would pull away early in the overtime to ultimately come away with the victory, 75-69.

The Patriots held their lead at the half, 28-27, and extended that lead to four after a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Patriot Freshman, Noah Djibonon, making it 43-39 MPCG. The Patriots led by that same four-point margin with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Nelson County picked up a pair of clutch buckets, one each from Brody Rainsberry and Zach Gibson, to tie the game at 56 with less than ten seconds to go. The Patriots were unable to put up a shot as regulation expired, sending the game to the extra session.

The Chargers started off the overtime with back-to-back threes from Axel Anderson and Jaxon Baumgarn, giving the momentum squarely to Nelson County. They did not relinquish the lead, holding off a late rally from MPCG. Baumgarn led Nelson County with 22 points, while Gibson (16), Ross Thompson (14), and Caden Joramo (11) all reached double figures. Three Patriots also reached double figures, led by Marshall Judisch with 17, Ryder Fugleberg with 15, and Djibonon with 12.

Nelson County improves to 4-3, picking up their first District 4 win. MPCG falls to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in District 4 play. The Chargers host Midway-Minto Saturday while MPCG is back in action Tuesday at Northern Cass.
