Nevis at Pequot Lakes
Recap
The Nevis Tigers spoiled the Pequot Lakes Patriots’ home opener, winning an overtime thriller.
After an early 5-2 lead for Nevis, Pequot Lakes used a 9-0 run fueled by back-to-back-to-back three-pointers from Grant Loge off the bench to grab a lead they wouldn’t give up in the first half. The Patriots lead by as many as eight, and held a 34-29 lead at the break.
With about 10 minutes to go in the 2nd half, the Patriots had built the lead to ten at 47-37. Nevis, with many players returning from a 20-win team that went to state last year, mounted a furious comeback. A 12-0 Tigers’ run erased the Patriots’ lead in about 3 and a half minutes. With the game tied at 56 and 1:43 remaining, Nevis milked the clock (something that won’t be allowed with the implementation of a shot clock starting in the 2023-24 season) for a final shot attempt. The ball was turned over, with the Patriots’ Eli Laposky launching a three quarters-quart shot with three seconds. The shot hit the backboard hard, landing in the hands of Sam Rysavy, but his put-back attempt came after the buzzer.
Pequot Lakes got on the scoreboard first in overtime with a pair of free throws, but Nevis responded with seven straight points aided by a couple Patriot turnovers, and held on for a 66-65 win.
The Tigers have won four in row in the series, which was renewed after a five-year break. Nevis is 5-0 and plays at Laporte Friday. Pequot Lakes, now 1-2, travels to Proctor for a section matchup Thursday.
