Red Lake Falls 3 Climax-Fisher 2 (22-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14, 17-15)
Red Lake Falls fought off two match points in the fifth set and defeated Climax-Fisher three sets to two Monday night in Fisher in the opening round of the Minnesota Section 8A volleyball playoffs.
With Climax-Fisher leading 14-12 in the fifth set, one point away from a victory, Red Lake Falls’ Shandi Nelson had a kill to make it 14-13, then a defensive error by the Knights tied the set 14-14. A four hits violation by the Eagles gave Climax-Fisher a second match point at 15-14. But the Knights had a four hit violation of their own to tie the set 15-15.
Red Lake Falls libero Quinnlyn Kenfield hit a serve that hit the top of the net and fell on the Climax-Fisher side to give the Eagles a 16-15 lead and match point. A Nelson kill won the set and match for the Eagles 17-15.
Nelson had 22 kills for the Eagles, with teammate Elizabeth Lytle adding 18.
Peyton Hoffman had 20 kills for Climax-Fisher, while teammate Ella Paulsrud served six aces–including four of the Knights’ first five points in the second set, when the Knights jumped to a 7-1 lead before eventually losing the set 25-19.
Red Lake Falls improves to 6-15 and advances to play at Badger-Greenbush-Middle River Thursday night. Climax-Fisher ends the season with a 13-14 mark.
