Recap
Region 2 Boys Basketball Tournament Championship
Thompson 46 Grafton 41
For the second time in school history, Thompson is going to the State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament. The Tommies defeated Grafton 46-41 Thursday night in Grand Forks to win the Region 2 championship and spoil Grafton’s hopes of repeating as Region champions.
Thompson went on an 11-0 run in the first quarter and never trailed after that…leading by nine at the half and after three quarters.
Grafton rallied in the fourth quarter, getting to 38-37 with 1:50 to play on a Kyler Droog offensive rebound. After Karter Peterson responded for Thompson with a basket, Ryan Hanson scored with 1:10 to play to make it 40-39. Then with 34 seconds left in regulation, Brayden Wolfgram hit a three pointer to put the Tommies up 43-39 to put the game out of Grafton’s reach.
Wolfgram scored 17 points to lead Thompson, including five three point baskets. Drew Starcevic added ten for the Tommies, who will take a 17-7 record to State.
Kyler Droog led Grafton (17-7) with 14 points. Tony Villareal added 13 and Braylon Baldwin ten for the Spoilers.
