Recap

The Central Cass Squirrels and the Thompson Tommies were both in need of a victory to recharge their season. The Tommies entered Tuesday night’s Class A boys basketball contest coming up short in each of their last four. Central Cass had fallen as well in each of the last three. Both teams wanted the win so badly, they needed an extra session to decide the victor. In the end, Central Cass would claim victory, 67-58 in Overtime.

Thompson led for the majority of a tight first half. Though the Tommies couldn’t extend their lead past seven through the first two quarters, leading 26-25 at the half. Central Cass would control the third quarter, outscoring the Tommies, 17-4 to take a 42-30 lead into the 4th. It looked like the Squirrels were going to scamper away with the win, leading 44-34 with 3:28 remaining in regulation, but Central Cass senior Eli Buhr was assessed a technical foul, sparking an 8-0 run for Thompson to get them back in the game. Both teams would exchange buckets and free-throws down the stretch, but neither could finish regulation with the lead. In the overtime session, Central Cass cruised, outscoring the Tommies, 15-6 in the extra session.

Central Cass senior Cole Holzer led all scorers with 33, including thirteen of the team’s seventeen points in the third quarter. Thompson senior Drew Overby led the Tommies with 26. Central Cass improves to 5-3 with the victory, while Thompson drops to 2-5 after the overtime setback. The Squirrels are off the rest of the week, picking back up their Region One play at Lisbon next Tuesday. Thompson looks to break the losing streak Friday when they host Hillsboro/Central Valley in Region Two play.
