Warroad 1,  Ada 0 (9 innings)

Warroad scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning and held on to defeat Ada 1-0 in the opening game of the North Sub-state Northwest Region American Legion Baseball tournament in Ada.

Both starting pitchers threw complete games.  Jacob McFarlane allowed 7 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts to get the win for Warroad.  Ada’s Austin McCraven gave up 8 hits, one run (0 earned runs), one walk with 5 strikeouts.

Defensively, Ada committed 5 errors but also had two great defensive plays as outfielders Baron Odden and Brandon Bueng both threw out runners at home plate.

The only run of the game came in the top of the ninth.  With one out, Hudson Sprowls reached on an error by shortstop Brennen Fetting.  Sprowls stole second and went to third on a single by Zach Rose.  Kaison Pietruszewski hit a grounder to second.  Ada retired Rose at second, but the relay to first was not in time for a double play and Sprowls came in to score the only run of the game.

Warroad’s Kanon Hoffman was 3 for 5 at the plate, while Rose was 2 for 3.  Ames Fassino was 2 for 4 for Ada.

Warroad advances to play Red Lake Falls later on Friday.  Warroad faces Fertile in an elimination game later on Friday.
