The United States Supreme Court said earlier today it would not would not hear former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin’s Appeal regarding his 2nd degree murder conviction that he received for his role in the death of George Floyd back in May of 2020. The death of Floyd sparked activist movements and riots across the nation. In April 2021 Chauvin was sentenced to 22 ½ years in prison for the death of Floyd.

The Supreme Court did not state its reasoning for the appeal rejection. Chauvin’s lawyers argued that their client was denied a fair trial due to the publicity surrounding the case and concerns about potential violence if he was acquitted.

Chauvin’s legal team originally argued his case to the Minnesota Court of Appeals back in April, but that court upheld his conviction and declined to give him a new trial.
