Wake The Lakes Life Hack for the Week:  “Around the House Life Hacks”

–Cut soft foods like a professional chef. Use some unscented floss to cut those soft foods cleanly.

–Prevent messy cupcakes by baking the cupcakes in ice cream cones instead of liners.

–Once you’ve made a bag of microwave popcorn, open the bag a touch. Then, turn it upside down and shake it over the trash to get rid of all the unpopped kernels.

–The next time you head out on a grocery run, take a picture of your refrigerator before hopping into your car.  As you’re walking around the store, you can reference the photo and it’ll help you remember what you do or don’t need.

–Instead of making one massive pan of meatloaf, use a muffin tin to create individual pucks.  Not only will the tin allow the meat to cook faster, it’ll also make portion control much easier to manage.

–A piece of lime or a bit of vinegar added to boiling water prevents the pot from turning black.”

–Those days when you have static in your hair, grab a dryer sheet and puncture it onto the bristles of your brush so that it lies flat against the base of the bristles. Then just brush as usual, and say goodbye to static frizz!

–To make dingy clothes look bright and colorful again, do a vinegar soak before washing and they will look bright and new!  You just fill a bucket with cold water, add about 1/2 – 1 cup plain vinegar and soak for 15-20 minutes. Next, throw it into the washer on a cold cycle, and air dry.

–A life hack to decrease the likelihood of forgetting something.  If you put something down temporarily, say it out loud. (“I’ve put my phone on the dresser.”) This engages many more areas of the brain (particularly the language centers) which creates a richer memory and makes it less likely you’ll forget where you put that item.

–If a recipe calls for onions and garlic, don’t put the garlic into the pan until the onion is nearly translucent.  Garlic cooks way faster than onions do. If you throw them in at the same time, it won’t taste as good and the garlic will burn.
