Conservation Officer Weekly Report – District 5

CO John Slatinski IV (Ray) Excellent snow and trail conditions has led to an increase in snowmobilers in the area, although considerably lower than historical levels. Angler numbers have been consistent with mixed reports on success. Equipment maintenance was tended to, and administrative tasks were completed. Overall, compliance was very good the past week.

CO Troy Fondie (Orr) reports snowmobile and angling activities were monitored. Fishing remains poor. Area forest roads and timber sales continue to be checked. Equipment work is on-going. Administrative items were tended to.

CO Aaron Larson (Tower) worked primarily angling and snowmobile enforcement. Larson spent time checking anglers on Trout Lake who were finding moderate success catching lake trout. He found violations relating to rules pertaining to the BWCAW.

CO Marc Johnson (Hibbing) primarily worked angling activity and snowmobile enforcement. Time was also spent assisting DNR Wildlife at the furbearer registration station in Hibbing. Violations encountered included taking fish without an angling license, unattended lines, snowmobile speed, and operating motor vehicles on a GIA snowmobile trail.

CO Shane Zavodnik (Virginia) winter activities greatly increased as temperatures warmed up throughout the week. Snowmobilers were out enjoying the excellent trail conditions, and anglers were out enjoying the warmer weather. Zavodnik continues to receive complaints from riders that some snowmobilers are traveling far too fast on the trails. He continues to patrol the trails for excessive speed.

CO Duke Broughten (Aurora) spent the week monitoring fishing and snowmobile activity. Recreational activity increased this week as weather warmed up. Fishermen reported limited success. Some lakes are starting to see some slush. Snowmobile trails are in good shape but are going to need some more snow. CO Broughten fielded calls regarding littering and fish house regulations.
