Deaths on Minnesota roads hit highest total since 2007

(Minnesota) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation released that 497 lives were lost on Minnesota roadways in the year 2021, which was the highest total since 2007.

According to the report from the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, speed related fatalities were the largest contributing factor at 162, followed by alcohol at 124 and 109 fatalities from being unbelted. 24 deaths were also attributed to distracted driving.

The fatalities included the untimely passing of 67 motorcyclists, 58 pedestrians, and 9 bicyclists.
