Sophomore quarterback Jake Starcevic rushed for three touchdowns and passed for one as Thompson improved to 3-0 on the season Friday by beating Harvey-Wells County 28-22 in Thompson.
Harvey-Wells County took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in 14 plays, capped when Tallen Thorson threw a five yard touchdown pass to Gabe Almaras. The try for a two point conversion failed, making the score 6-0 in favor of the Hornets.
Thompson tied the game on the first play of the second quarter as Starcevic ran it in from four yards out. Starcevic ran for a two point conversion to put the Tommies up 8-6.
Harvey-Wells County responded with a 59 yard touchdown pass from Thorson to Jaxon Feist. Thorson passed to Keaton Keller for the two point conversion to put the Hornets up 14-8.
Later in the second quarter, Starcevic completed a 51 yard scoring pass to Max Roller. When the two point conversion failed, the game was tied 14 all.
Just before the end of the half, Thompson’s Jacob Brend recovered a Thorson fumble at the Hornets’ nine yard line. Two plays later, Starcevic scored on a six yard run to put the Tommies ahead to stay. Starcevic passed to Brody Gibson for the two point conversion, giving Thompson a 22-14 lead at intermission.
Starcevic scored his third touchdown of the game late in the third quarter on a two yard run. The extra point kick was missed, putting Thompson ahead 28-14 after three.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Almaras scored on a five yard run for Harvey-Wells County. Thorson ran for the two point conversion to make it 28-22 in favor of Thompson.
A Feist interception gave the Hornets the ball with 7:14 to play. But they went three and out and Thompson took the ball from their own 35 yard line with 6:09 to play and ran out the clock for the win.
Thompson improves to 3-0 on the year; Harvey-Wells County is now 1-2.
