Reece Berberich rushed for two touchdowns and two extra points, and teammate Jake Starcevic ran for two scores and threw for another as Thompson remained undefeated with a 35-11 win over Oak Grove in Fargo Friday night.
Starcevic connected with Karter Peterson on a 33 yard touchdown pass to cap a six play, 60 yard drive to start the game. Starcevic ran for a two point conversion to give the Tommies a 8-0 lead.
Oak Grove came back and tied the game when quarterback Ryleee Bakkegard scored on a two yard run, then added the two point conversion to make it 8-all.
Thompson then drove 65 yards in five plays to regain the lead as Berberich scored on an eight yard run. The try for point failed, giving Thompson a 14-8 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Oak Grove’s Brady Baker would recover a Thompson fumble…leading to a Jake Thompson 38 yard field goal that put the Grovers to within 14-11.
In the second quarter, Berberich scored his second TD of the game from six yards out, then ran for the two point conversion to give the Tommies a 22-11 lead.
On the Tommies’ next possession, Starcevic scored on a ten yard run. The extra point kick missed, giving Thompson a 28-11 lead at halftime.
Thompson finished the scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter as Starcevic scored from one yard out. The drive was highlighted by a fake punt on fourth down when Starcevic completed a 12 yard pass to Josh Juve for a first down. Tommy Schumacher kicked the extra point to make the final score 35-11.
Starcevic ran for 125 yards on 22 carries and completed 7 of 14 passes for 108 yards. Berberich carried 15 times for 97 yards for the Tommies.
Oak Grove’s Bakkegaard completed 5 of 12 passes for 104 yards with one interception, while rushing 12 times for 66 yards.
Thompson improves to 7-0 on the year and travels to Bottineau next Saturday.
Oak Grove is 1-6; the Grovers play at Northern Cass next week.
