Local Pet Rescue Reminds Pet Owners the Importance of Spaying & Neutering Your Pets

Fertile, MN — February is Spay & Neuter Awareness Month, and a local non-profit animal shelter is encouraging pet owners to do their part to reduce the population and stray pets. Bringing your pets in to be spayed or neutered can be difficult and sometimes costly, especially for those “barn cats,” but doing so can ultimately lead to a healthier life for the animal. Cats and dogs who have been neutered are less likely to develop fatal diseases and are less likely to engage in violent behavior.

Sid Williams, owner of Smiley’s Animal Rescue in Fertile, says by spaying or neutering those barn or farm cats, they will still do their part in reducing rodent populations because they tend to stay closer to home.

Spaying and neutering your cats also greatly reduces the number of stray cats and Williams says the life of stray cat is not a good life.

Williams says she currently has 26 cats or kittens available for adoption at her shelter. She hopes to soon be able to take in dogs as well. She is hosting a blanket tying party next Sunday, February 12th at the Winger Community Center where folks can come meet some of the cats up for adoption. We’ll have more on that event and Smiley’s Rescue next week on R & J News.
