Section 8A Team Wrestling
FERTILE, MN—Mahnomen-Waubun and Bagley-Fosston were both eliminated in the semifinals of the Section 8A team wrestling tournament Friday night at Fertile-Beltrami. United North Central won the final two bouts to defeat Bagley-Fosston 31-24. While Frazee, the top seed, defeated Mahnomen-Waubun 46-16. Thunderbirds Coach John Short talked about the contest.
“Very good” would be an understatement to describe the Thunderbirds’ Blake McMullen. McMullen and Frazee’s Tanner Moe wrestled to a 0-0 standoff and it took four overtimes for McMullen to get a reversal and win the bout 1-0. McMullen talked to R&J’s Joe Lancello after the bout.
Mahnomen-Waubun Coach John Short said Friday’s victory clinched the top seed for McMullen in the 8A individual tournament. That individual tournament is next Saturday in Crookston.
Other winners for Mahnomen-Waubun Friday were Cleighton Hoban at 121 pounds with a 12-3 decision; Connor Lecy scored a pin at 145 pounds and heavyweight Kaden Bartnes went to two overtimes before gaining a 2-0 decision.
United North Central went on to win the Section 8A championship by defeating Frazee 36-26.
