(Minnesota) — With the increase in snowmobile related fatalities on Minnesota trails this winter, the Department of Natural Resources is putting a stronger emphasis on safety and prioritizing safe rides.
During the past 8 snowmobile seasons, more than seven riders on average have lost their lives. This snowmobile season has already seen multiple fatalities, including now 3 in Aitkin County, and multiple instances of riders falling through the ice.
Helpful safety reminders do include staying on marked trails, leaving alcohol at home as that is a factor in 60 percent of fatal crashes, watching your speed, being careful on the ice, and taking a snowmobile safety course. Additional safety tips can also be found on the DNR’s website.
