Lake Ice Safety Tips

Going out on the ice for fishing or snowmobiling can be a fun winter activity.  But not if the ice isn’t thick enough to support your vehicle’s weight or your weight.  Polk County Sheriff Jim Tadman talks about factors that can make ice thickness vary from one place to another.

Tadman points out that the DNR and county law enforcement don’t keep track of how thick the ice is….so check with resort owners near the lake where you’re planning to go.  Tadman also recommends driving at a safe speed on the ice.

Tadman says you should also tell others where you’re going; so in case there is a problem, law enforcement can know where to start looking for you.
