Detroit Lakes Has Swimmer’s Itch Problem
DETROIT LAKES, MN—Something called swimmer’s itch is causing a problem in Detroit Lakes. That’s why the City of Detroit Lakes will be treating the mile-long stretch of Detroit Lake on Wednesday. Swimmer’s itch lives in the blood of infected animals, like ducks, and is passed through the animals by their feces. It appears in humans as a rash and is caused by an allergic reaction from the parasite passed by animals. To reduce your risk of getting swimmer’s itch, it’s recommended that you apply waterproof sunscreen, towel off immediately after getting out of the water, and then shower using hot soapy water as soon as you get home.
