Minnesota DNR warns hunters about baiting
The Minnesota DNR wants to remind hunters that they are not allowed to take deer with the aid or use of bait anywhere in Minnesota. “Taking” includes attempting to take.
According to the Minnesota DNR baiting is the placing, exposing, depositing, distributing or scattering bait that is capable of attracting or enticing deer.
Some reasons why baiting is illegal in Minnesota is because it can increase the risk of disease transmission, attracts and holds large numbers of deer on private parcels creating a privatization of the deer herd, and it can alter a deer’s natural movement blocking off another hunters attempt to harvest deer.
Some foods that are considered bait includes grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, hay or other food that is capable of attracting or enticing deer
By law all bait must be completely removed for 10 days prior to hunting. Violation of these baiting laws penalties, revocation of hunting licenses and the confiscation of harvested animals, firearms, weapons, and gear.
