MN Child Passenger Law Changes
New laws will take effect in Minnesota starting August 1st regarding child safety seats, booster seats and seat belts. The new law says that infants up to age 2 will need to be in a seat that faces the rear. A child at least 2 who has outgrown the rear-facing seat will have to be in a forward-facing seat with an internal harness. A 4-year-old who has outgrown the forward-facing seat will need to be in a booster seat with a lap belt and shoulder belt. A 9-year-old who has outgrown the booster seat and can prove they can show how a seat belt fits correctly, must sit with a lap belt and shoulder belt. Also, anyone 13 and younger must sit in the back seat.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says the new laws are based on best practice and conforms with the American Academy of Pediatrics child seat recommendations.
