‘Rain & Red Clay’ Concert Explores Heritage, History

On Wednesday, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Brainerd’s Tornstrom Auditorium, the Lakes Area Music Festival explores musical roots in “Rain and Red Clay.” This chamber music program presents works for strings and winds that connect heritage and history.

The Afro-British composer, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, found himself drawn to the music and culture of Black America, where his forebears had been enslaved. LAMF presents his luscious Clarinet Quintet alongside two of his fundamental influences: the European tradition of composers, embodied in Brahms’s Violin Sonata; and Black American music represented here by Valerie Coleman’s Red Clay and Mississippi Delta, which uses blues riffs to create a woodwind quintet with a southern accent.

Founded in 2009, the Lakes Area Music Festival is a 501(c)(3) non-profit. The 2022 season is  bringing more than 200 artists from around the world to participate in chamber music, symphonic repertoire, opera, outreach, and education. The renowned series runs through August 21.
