Senate Majority Leader Johnson discusses new Minnesota state flag and seal
One of the biggest stories to come out of the 2023 Minnesota legislative session was the approval to move forward with a redesign of the Minnesota state flag and seal. After multiple months of meetings cutting down thousands of public submissions to a final design many local governments have denounced the changing of the flag and seal. Minnesota House Minority Leader Mark Johnson appeared on the Kaleidoscope program and addressed the final designs and the response to the change.
Johnson’s opinion on the new state seal design is more positive than the flag design but he says he has heard people voicing their opinions of some design choices for the seal as well.
Minnesota Republican Party Chairman David Hahn voiced his opposition to the redesign on Monday saying “If the Legislature fails in the effort to repeal it, we’re not going to recognize the new flag.” He also said the flag redesign “represents the DFL Party, not the state of Minnesota.”
The Minnesota legislature is expected to discuss the redesign in the coming weeks.
