Severe Weather Awareness Week Friday
Friday is the final day of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. This day’s focus is on extreme heat. Jim Kaiser, warning coordinating meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, says severe weather isn’t always associated with thunderstorms.
Adults aged 65 and over are most vulnerable to heat related illnesses. When warmer temperatures and high humidities occur, you should stay in an air-conditioned room and be sure to drink plenty of water—and not just when you’re thirsty. Try to avoid strenuous outdoor work during the warmest part of the day. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says you should avoid hot and heavy meals because they add heat to your body.
