State of Minnesota taking public submissions in State Flag Redesign 

The State of Minnesota is now taking public submissions for the redesign of the state flag and seal. All entries must follow the guidelines outlined by the State Emblems Redesign Commission and submit their design to mnhs.org/serc. 

The submission deadline is Oct. 30, 2023. The State Emblems Redesign Commission was established earlier this year with the goal to develop and adopt a new design for the official state seal and a new design for the official state flag.

Many find that the imagery depicted on the flag is offensive, as it depicts a Native American being driven off the land. Many have also called for the redesign of the flag because it is in breach of many principles of proper flag design. 

Five submissions for the new state seal and state flag will be chosen for final consideration by the State Emblems Redesign Commission, who will then pick a design or a modified version to be used on the flag and emblem.
