GBB B State Qualifier: Maple River 73, Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich 70 (OT)

Maple River came back from an 18 point third quarter deficit to force overtime and then defeated Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich 73-70 in overtime to qualify for the State Class B Girls Basketball Tournament next week in Jamestown.

Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich built a ten point halftime lead on 61.5% field goal shooting, but the Cardinals cooled in the second half…making 37.5% of their shots in the second half and overtime.

Maple River rallied thanks to the three point shooting of guards Kiana Lerud and Violete Richman, with each making four threes. And with 8.5 seconds left in regulation, Richman sank two free throws to tie the game at 64 and force overtime.

In the extra session, the Raiders’ Adyson Hannig scored six of her 15 points as Maple River scored the first six points of the overtime and held on for the victory.

Richman, an eighth grader, scored 25 points with five assists and four steals for the Raiders, who are now 21-5 on the season.  Lerud added 14 points and Carly Hovelson came off the bench to score 12.

Cora Badding scored 27 points for Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich, with Aubrey Badding scoring 13–plus nine rebounds and four assists–and Jaya Henderson scoring 12 as the Cardinals–who started the week ranked number one in the North Dakota State rankings–will have to buy tickets to see the State Tournament.  The Cardinals end the year 23-3.

Maple River has been seeded seventh in the Class B State Tournament; the Raiders will face second seed Bowman County in the tournament opener Thursday afternoon in Jamestown.
