In a matchup of teams ranked in the top 10 for Class A, the #8 ranked Ada-Borup-West Cougars held on for the 66-64 road win over the #6 ranked Red Lake County Rebels. The advantage in rebounds, and second chance points, allowed the Cougars to lead by five at halftime (30-25), despite the Rebels advantages in outside shooting and turnovers. The Rebels’ shooting cooled to start the second half as the Cougars built up a double digit lead of 14 points. At that point the Rebel’s re-ignited their shooting to bring the lead down to three points with five minutes remaining. The Cougars would then regroup and rebuild a 63-52 lead with under three minutes to play. Red Lake County then forced turnovers and missed shots to quickly trim the score to a five point game with 1:09 remaining and then down to just two points with under 45 seconds left. Needing a score the Cougars got just that with a close range look in the paint to go up by four. After a Rebel missed three the Cougars were fouled and made one free throw with the Rebels hurrying down the floor to hit a three point shot with less than five seconds left to make the score 66-64 when they fouled again to send the Cougars to the free throw line. The free throw was missed and the Rebels were able to gather the rebound and push up the court for a good look at a long three that bounced off the rim as the horn sounded to give the Cougars the victory.
