Tyson Leshuk hit a grand slam and Chase Haffely struck out 8 over 6 innings as Hillsboro-Central Valley defeated MayPort-CG 10-1 Thursday afternoon in Hillsboro.
Sawyer McGillis hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Patriots an early advantage. But HCV responded with 4 runs in their half of the first, combining 3 hits, 3 MPCG errors and a balk.
Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Burros loaded the bases with two out, when Leshuk hit a drive over the left field fence to make the score 8-1 in HCV’s favor. In the next inning, Brayden Chenault and Bryce Miller had run-scoring hits to make the score 10-1.
Haffely pitched 6 innings to get the win, allowing 5 hits and one run, with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. Riley Richter threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Alex Aarsvold took the loss for MPCG (1-2); in 4 innings, he allowed 6 hits, 8 runs (5 earned) with one walk and 5 strikeouts. Connor Dockter pitched one inning, giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, with one strikeout. Sawyer McGillis pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Leshuk, Chenault, Miller and Richter had 2 hits apiece for HCV (3-2). Leshuk had 4 rbi, Miller 2 and Chenault one.
HCV will now host Grafton Monday afternoon–they were originally set to play Midway-Minto that day. MPCG will take on Hatton-Northwood Monday in Hatton.
