Hillsboro/Central Valley 10, Thompson 8 (8 innings) Region 2 Baseball
Hillsboro/Central Valley advanced to the winners bracket final in the Region 2 baseball tournament Monday with a 10-8, 8 inning victory over top seed and defending Class B State champion Thompson, ending the Tommies’ 14 game winning streak.
Riley Richter’s bases loaded walk in the eighth inning broke an 8-8 tie. Alexander Dufner followed with an rbi single to give the Burros a 10-8 lead. Chase Haffley got the final 3 outs to let HCV (14-10) advance.
HCV grabbed a 5-0 in the second inning without the benefit of a hit. 2 walks, 2 hit batters and a sacrifice fly brought in 2 first inning runs. Then 2 walks, a 2 base error and two wild pitches gave the Burros a 5-run lead. Haffley doubled home a run in the fourth inning to make it 6-0 for the Burros.
Thompson got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Will Welke doubled in a run, another run scored on a double play and Eli Gemmill singled in a run to cut the gap to 6-4.
The Tommies tied the game in the fifth on a Welke sacrifice fly and a Drew Odenbach rbi single.
HCV regained the lead in the sixth on rbi hits by Bryce Miller and Haffley, making it 8-6. But Thompson came back in their half on rbi hits by Dex Avdem and Thomas Schumacher and tied the game at 8.
It stayed deadlocked until the eighth. With one out, Tyson Leshuk singled, Bryce Miller doubled. Haffley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Richter then walked to break the tie, then Dufner singled to put the Burros up 10-8 and that lead held up.
Haffley got the victory in relief of starter Elijah Smallbeck, going 4 1/3 innings. Miller went 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored and a run batted in. Haffely was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi. Leshuk was 2 for 4, scoring 3 times.
This was just Thompson’s second loss of the season after winning 14 in a row. Braden Tyce took the loss in relief of starter Drew Odenbach. Welke was 2 for 4 with 2 rbi as the Tommies are now 18-2 on the year.
Hillsboro-Central Valley will face Larimore in the winners bracket final Tuesday afternoon. Thompson meets Hatton-Northwood in an elimination game Tuesday at noon.
