Thompson 3, HCV 2 Region 2 Baseball Championship

Jeromy Tyce took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as Thompson held on to defeat Hillsboro/Central Valley 3-2 Friday at Mayville State.  That win by the Tommies forced a second championship game in the double elimination tournament.

Tyce ended the game with a 2-hitter, he allowed 2 runs (0 earned) with 3 walks, 4 strikeouts, a hit batter and a wild pitch.

Thompson opened the scoring in the second inning when Johnny Muhs singled to score Will Welke for a 1-0 lead.  The Tommies added 2 more runs in the fourth inning with one run scoring on an Eli Gemmill sacrifice fly and the second on an error to make the score 3-0.

A Chase Haffely double in the sixth inning broke up Tyce’s no-hit bid.  Then in the seventh, HCV nearly grabbed the game.  Alexander Dufner struck out to start the inning, but the catcher dropped strike three and then threw wildly to first to let Dufner reach second. Dufner then took third on a wild pitch.  After a ground out, Brayden Chenault singled to score Dufner and make it a 3-1 game. A walk and a fielders choice put runners on first and third with 2 out.  Then a Thompson error allowed a run to score, making it 3-2.  Another error loaded the bases.  Tyce struck out Haffely to end the game and force a second championship game.

Bryce Miller (2-1) took the loss for HCV (15-11).  In 6 innings, he allowed 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), with a walk, 2 strikeouts and a hit batter.

The Class B Region 2 championship would be decided in a second game later Friday in Mayville.
