Thompson vs Northern Cass – State Class B Baseball Tournament Semifinals

Fargo, ND – The Thompson Tommies will fight for a 4th consecutive state championship on Saturday after a comeback win in walkoff fashion.

Starting pitchers Trey Husar and Drew Odenbach dueled with 3 scoreless innings each before Northern Cass broke the stalemate in the Top of the 4th inning with a Chris Hoiland safety squeeze and a Sam Klemen 2-out single to go up 2-0.

The Tommies would answer in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff double from Thomas Schumacher, who would score on a Drew Odenbach RBI single.

The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the 6th with a two-out Schumacher double to extend the inning, where Odenbach again singled him home for his second RBI.

The Jaguars manufactured a small ball run in the 7th to carry a 3-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning with a State Championship appearance on the line.

Trey Husar induced a weak ground ball off the bat of Kaden Loiland to 3rd base but an errant throw moved Loiland to 2nd base. Eli Gemill then laid down a bunt that Husar threw off target to first, pulling Jacob Ose off the base.

Husar reached his pitch limit and Matthew Metzger entered, striking out Braden Tyce, but a passed ball allowed the tying run to score.

The big moment found Will Welke again. Following a 4RBI performance yesterday again Renville County, he came up with the bases loaded and winning run at 3rd. Metzger fell behind 3-0 in the count with nowhere to put Welke, but delivered two called strikes to fill the count before hitting Welke with the 3-2 pitch to force across the game-winning run.

Thompson will face the winner of the Lamoure Litchville/Marion vs Park River Area for the state title Saturday afternoon.
