Two of the top teams in their respective divisions of North Dakota volleyball squared off Friday night in Thompson. Langdon Area/Munich, ranked 2nd in Class B, swept Thompson, ranked 3rd in Class A, 25-23, 25-10 and 27-25.
The first set was closely contested, with Langdon Area/Munich going on a late 6-2 run to get the victory. The Cardinals burst to a 14-4 start in the second set with Taya Feist getting 4 kills and a block on their way to a comfortable set victory. In set three, Langdon Area/Munich took a 17-7 advantage and led 24-20. Thompson fought off 4 match points and even had a 25-24 lead with a chance to force a fourth set. But a Tommies hitting error, an ace by Kemi Morstad and a Haaven kill finished the set and the match 27-25.
Freshman Hilary Haaven had 18 kills, a block assist and a service ace to lead the Cardinals (24-3), with sophomore Emma Hall adding 5 kills, 1 1/2 blocks and 3 aces.
Senior Abby Olson had 8 kills to lead Thompson (19-5). Classmate Danica Gross had 3 kills, 3 solo blocks and 2 block assists.
Unofficial stats: Langdon Area/Munich had 33 kills, 7 blocks, 6 aces and 4 service errors.
Thompson had 27 kills, 7 blocks, 3 aces and 5 service errors.
Langdon Area/Munich will begin the District 4 Class B tournament Thursday in Rolla against either Four Winds/Minnewaukan or St. John.
Thompson’s next game is Tuesday night at home against Hillsboro/Central Valley.
