Freshman Grady Horken threw 2 touchdown passes and ran for another as Polk County West earned its first win of the season Friday, 40-0 over Crookston in Climax.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Thunder got on the board on the first play of the second quarter as Horken scored on a 46 yard run.  The extra point kick failed to make the score 6-0.   Then with 38.4 seconds left in the half, Polk County West drove 73 yards in 4 plays with Horken, now playing quarterback after an injury to Nick Satterlund, passing to Skyler Berg for a 21 yard TD.  The PAT failed, making the score 12-0 at halftime.

Polk County West scored again on the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter.  Horken connected with Jaycer Davis on a 56 yard TD to make it 18-0.

On Crookston’s ensuing possession, quarterback Tate Hamre’s pass was intercepted by Ti Davis, who returned it 53 yards to the house for a 26-0 PCW lead.

Later in the third quarter, Horken scored his second touchdown of the day on a one yard run to put the Thunder ahead 32-0 after three frames.  And in the fourth, Reez Eckherdt scored on a 68 yard TD, then caught a pass for a 2 point conversion to increase the lead to 40-0 with 10:04 to play.

Horken completed 2 of 3 passes for 77 yards and 2 TDs.  He also rushed 8 times for 64 yards and a score.  Eckherdt had 112 yards rushing on 5 carries.

Polk County West (1-2) had 89 yards passing, plus 246 yards rushing for 335 yards total offense.  The Thunder had 14 first downs and had 6 penalties for 35 yards.

Crookston (0-3) managed 20 yards passing and 51 yards rushing for 71 yards total offense.  The Pirates had 3 first downs and had 7 penalties for 57 yards.

Hamre completed 2 of 11 passes for 20 yards with 2 interceptions.  Dexter Janek had 2 catches for 20 yards.  Hamre was also the Pirates’ leading rusher with 26 yards on 11 carries.

Polk County West travels to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley next Friday; Crookston hosts Cass Lake-Bena next Friday.
